Products

I believe that hair care is best when it’s minimalist. These are the products I trust to support your simple, effective (and fun) care practice.

Pssst- In the name of transparency, if you end up buying a product from Hairstory or Ag I do receive a commission.

  • What does hair need?

    Water!

What Helps us hold onto water?

    Oil!

    What repels water?

    Also Oil! :(

So what do we do? We seek balance by using gentle shampoos that don’t strip the oils from the hair so aggressively that the hair can’t retain water but are deep cleansing enough that we don’t get an oil build up.

    AG Hair Care:

Ag is a Vancouver Based company that I have switched my in-house product line to, in light of the tariffs and sticking it to trump. Their ethics and product line are excellent and I am particularly smitten with their curl line. So good.

    Hairstory New Wash- Original

New Wash is regrettably the absolute best hair cleanser out there, and they are tragically pricey and American, boo.

Resetting: Humans are oily, we are supposed to be oily, but unfortunately oil repels water, and our hair must have water or it will become brittle and dry. So no matter what weekly cleanser you use, about every 6 months to a year, you should use a stripping shampoo,

Personally I really enjoy Aveda Rosemary MInt, Malibu Un-do-goo, or Tea Tree Shampoo. Overuse of stripping shampoo can permanently damage your hair please adopt this practice with extreme caution.

  • Quick Reminder less is ALWAYS more when it comes to support products.

AG Hair Care: A local Vancouver brand and I am OBSESSED with their styling products. My absolute favourite is Beach Bomb, long hair, short hair, wavy, curly, straight, thin, thick this product is the holy grail of lived in natural looking styling. Everything else they carry is also good, but Beach Bomb forever.

Hairstory :What can I say, everything they make does exactly what they say it will. The only note I have is that they are a gentle brand, so if you have particularly thick hair you will need to use a large volume of any given product.

Lush: is a Vancouver Brand that has an excellent Sea Spray and pomade called ‘Dirty’. However I cannot reccomend any of their other products.

  • Hui Hui Oil: If you experience, dryness, itchyness, flakiness, fragile or thin/ning hair, you need a scalp oil in your life. Hui Hui is a beautiful effective luxury product that smells amazing and works even better.

Mielle Rosemary MInt Oil: Is another support product, it’s effective, delightfully fresh and at a less luxe price point. In fact it’s what I use for the scalp massages in shop.

Household Oils: Creating a routine is always half the battle, if you want to see if you can integrate a routine before investing I would reccomend Rosehip, Grapeseed or Sunflower oil. Please bear in mind that more is NOT better and be sure to stay away from oils that are heavy or harden like Olive, Shea and Coconut oil.

Scalp Brush: Silcone scalp brushes are shockingly effective. Hairstory has an excellent one.

Vitamins and Fats: Despite the agressive war on fats, you need it for healthy brain, muscle, skin and hair. Quite a lot of it, so adding a fish oil supplement or vegan alternative is a great idea to support skin health. Iron, Magnesium, B12, D are important to have plenty of, for everything including healthy scalp and hair.

Scalp Scrub: Davines has a Sea Salt Scalp Scrub. Coffee grounds are also effective to a lesser extent. If you experience Psoriasis or Eczema intergrating a scrub for flare ups may help. If you do not have a skin condition a scrub will likely exasperate things, I would encourage you to try adding an oil to your routine rather than a manual exfoliator.

  • Hairbrush: A good hairbrush is a wonderful thing. I highly recommend Free Your Hairbrush and encourage everyone to make use of the websites tutorials to understand more about the benefits of a brushing routine.

Wide Tooth Comb: I see no benefit to splashing out on this tool, going to a CVS or anywhere really will get you exactly what you need. That being said I do love a good wood comb, eventually it’ll devlope a patina and that’s just cool.

Diffuser: The quicker you can dry hair the more volume and texture you retain. Diffusers are all over the place, CVS, Sephora, Department Stores, Online. The important part is to not pay too much for it (nothing over $50) and that it be compatible ‘universal’ with your blodryer

Claw Clips: are a great, easy way to protect wet or damp hair from drying flat. It’s also gentle on your hair.

Scrunchies: Friends don’t let friends get breakage by using elastic hair bands. If you wear your hair up- buy scrunchies. Once again, you can have a delightful time finding small designers who make them or just go to a Spehora, Drugstore, where ever.

  • Silk/Satin Pillow Cases: Great for reducing pulling and damage from sleep.

Slap Cap: An excellent way to protect fragile hair or get longer wear for your style.

Biotin: Is an excellent vitamin that supports skin and hair. If you want to grow strong, healthy, long hair this would be a great thing to introduce. Heads up though, it will make ALL of your hair grow.

Setting Clips: If your particular about your hair but not interested in using heat tools, then setting clips are a great, fast way to encourage the shape you want.

Hot Rollers: Got High Femme aspirations but only have a Soft Butch level of interest in comitting to the performance? Then Hot Rollers are for you, it takes a while to get used to it, but once you have the dexterity, you’ll be able to have bombshell hair in mere minutes.

Salon Dryer Chairs: Do you have excessive wealth, space, or the pure will to have a literal Hair Drying Chair? Amazing, it’s the frigging best way to dry your hair, both in a practical sense and experientally. I suggest looking for one secondhand on FB Marketplace or Craigslist.
